Magnesium

Magnesium is a vital secondary nutrient that is crucial for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy. Magnesium is a central component of the chlorophyll molecule, which is responsible for capturing light energy and initiating the synthesis of carbohydrates. Without an adequate supply of magnesium, plants exhibit chlorosis, characterized by yellowing leaves and reduced photosynthetic activity. Magnesium also activates various enzymes involved in nutrient metabolism and energy transfer within plants.

Magnesium deficiencies are often corrected by applying Magnesium-containing fertilizers, such as magnesium sulfate or dolomitic limestone. These amendments not only provide magnesium to the plants but also contribute to improving soil structure and pH balance. Similarly, sulfur deficiencies can be remedied by applying elemental sulfur, gypsum, or sulfate-containing fertilizers. These fertilizers release sulfur into the soil, ensuring its availability for plant uptake.
